Frequently asked questions
Can I ask about your scones?
Where are they made ?
We make everything in a dedicated kitchen at Scoffle HQ in the Onnut area of Bangkok.
How are they made?
Everything is made by hand in small batches using traditional methods and carefully sourced ingredients.
Good butter and flour are essential - but so is knowing when to stop mixing.
Why are your scones triangular (not round)?
In a word - texture.
Our master baker, James, has spent years learning to work dough just enough to keep scones light and fluffy.
Round scones leave offcuts that need re-rolling, which affects the texture.
Triangles can be cut with no waste - so every Scoffle scone stays soft and consistent.
Why are the other scones I’ve tried in Bangkok sandy and dry?
Usually it comes down to over-working the dough or using the wrong flour.
A proper English scone should be soft and light - not sandy or crumbly.
Why more places don’t seem to know that remains a mystery.
Do you have vegetarian / vegan / gluten-free options?
All our scones are vegetarian by default, and none contain egg.
Vegan or gluten-free scones are a little trickier, because good flour and butter are at the heart of what we do.
That said, we’ve experimented with our own vegan butter and oat milk recipes - so never say never.
I have a question about clotted cream
Is it the same thing as whipped cream?
No, it isn’t (despite what occasionally gets served up around Bangkok).
Clotted cream has a much thicker texture than whipped cream, more like cream cheese.
Ah, so you mean cottage cheese, then?
Again, no. Despite their somewhat similar names, clotted cream and cottage cheese are two very different things.
What about sour cream?
... I'm not sure we can be friends any more.
How is clotted cream made?
Traditionally it's made by slowly cooking full-fat cream for about 12 hours, but it's notoriously difficult to do with pasteurised cream. We were determined to make it available here, so we worked hard to refine a method that works very successfully with local ingredients.
Where can I buy from you?
Where do you sell?
We sell online, and at the K-Village Farmers' Market.
You'll also find us a lot of festive markets in the run up to Christmas.
Do you have a shop?
Not at the moment.
For now, we just sell online and at pop-up events.
Can I pick up from your location?
Again, we'd prefer not.
While Scoffle Me has a dedicated kitchen, it's still part of our private home.
I have a question about ordering and payment
Is there a minimum order?
280 Baht - which happens to be the price of a bag of four scones.
Would you really want fewer than that?
Can I order in advance?
Yes, you can order up to a month in advance.
What forms of payment do you accept?
Currently we are only able to accept bank transfers.
Do you cater or take custom orders?
Absolutely. We'd be delighted to cater for your meeting, event, or gathering. Just give us a couple of weeks of notice.
We also offer options to customise our packaging with your event or company details.
If you have an enquiry, please feel free to contact us directly.
I have a question about delivery
Where do you deliver?
Usually, just within Bangkok.
However, if you have a real hankering for proper scones but you're further afield, contact us directly and we'll see if we can help.
How do you deliver?
We use Grab Express for most deliveries. It's the best way to get your order to you quickly and safely, even if it includes clotted cream.
How much does delivery cost?
Delivery fees depend on the distance from Scoffle HQ in On Nut to you. It should be calculated automatically at checkout.
How long does it take to deliver?
Place your order before 5pm Monday - Friday, and we'll usually deliver the next day.
Orders placed over the weekend will arrive on Tuesday.
I have a question about storage and serving
What’s the best way to store scones?
Keep them in an airtight container at room temperature.
How long can I keep scones?
They're best eaten within the first couple of days, but they'll happily keep for 3-4 days.
Can I freeze scones?
Absolutely. Freeze them as soon as possible and they’ll keep beautifully.
Just let them return to room temperature under a clean tea towel before eating.
How long will clotted cream keep?
As long as you're careful (no double-dipping, thank you), clotted cream will keep in the fridge for a couple of weeks.
Should I warm my scones?
You don't need to, but it's some people's preference.
Oh, except our cheese scones! You should definitely try them hot.
How do I warm them?
Split them in half and pop them in the oven at 180°C for a few minutes, or until they start to brown around the edges.
Skip the microwave if at all possible.
I have a question about scones in general
How are English scones different from American scones?
English scones are lighter, softer, and less sweet. American scones are usually denser and more cake-like.
Confusingly, what Brits call a scone is much closer to what Americans call a biscuit.
Does 'scone' rhyme with 'on' or 'tone'?
Both are correct. People argue about it. We recommend focusing on eating them instead.
What’s a cream tea?
A cream tea is a traditional English light meal, usually served in the afternoon, consisting of tea served with scones, clotted cream, and jam.
Cream or jam first?
Ah, this is the long-standing dispute about whether you should put clotted cream or jam on your scone first. The debate is particularly famous between Devon and Cornwall, two counties in the south-west of England, where it's been ongoing for almost 1,000 years.
If you really want our opinion, we think it has a lot to do with the relative textures of the cream and jam you happen to have, so it just depends.
Our advice is do whatever makes you happy.
And not just when it comes to scones.
